Many years ago, I found my favorite pair of strappy sandals, that I wore summer after summer, by a designer who was unknown to me at the time. They are actually the only pair of shoes that have withstood the test of time in my closet, as they are currently still here about 7 years later! The designer was Alexandre Birman, and now the brand is back in my life collaborating with Black Iris for our Fall/Winter Look Book shoot. His shoes are unbelievably well-made, flattering, and unique. Whether it be his new Fall booties, a flat sandal, or heels for a night out, they come in an array of neutrals that go with most anything in my closet. I was thrilled and honored to have the brand participate at the annual Mama & Tata shopping event this past week at Topping Rose House, where they brought a beautiful selection of shoes to complement our new collection, and for a great cause, benefiting New York Children’s Hospitals.
How many years have you been in business in NYC?
The Alexandre Birman brand launched in New York City and the American market nearly eleven years ago. We celebrated our tenth anniversary in May of 2018 with the launch of our flagship boutique on Madison Avenue.
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
I grew up in the shoe business alongside my father in Brazil. From a very young age, I was immersed in the ins and outs of the industry and it instantly became part of my DNA. I fell in love with the craft and building a reliable and thriving brand.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
The luxury shoe market is highly competitive, so it is essential for us to stay ahead of the trends and deliver what we believe in. We are not afraid to push the boundaries and create pieces that are both fashion-forward and timeless.
What do you feel gives you longevity in this big city with so many options?
The city is a constant source of inspiration. New York City is my second home and I really love that there are endless possibilities and things to see and experience. The bustle is a contagious source of creativity and motivation. Having a boutique and showroom on Madison Avenue is an incredibly humbling concept. Keeps the brand and myself always inspired.
How do you positively impact your clientele?
Our goal is to create an experience for our clientele. Whether in store or an online purchase we want to be serving the utmost impeccable customer service and personal connection that will authentically bring repeat customers. From start to finish we want a lasting relationship to be formed.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love working with my teams both here and abroad. I am surrounded by talented people and it’s empowering to learn from one another and interact with the different facets of the business. From the factory to the corporate offices, we are a family whose end goal is to produce beautiful pieces for strong women.
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
Would not consider Central Park a secret but this is undoubtedly my favorite place in NYC. I am a dedicated triathlete and am always training. The park is my escape and sanity. You can always find me there running, which helps to keep me a grounded and inspired professional.
What is the most memorable feedback a client has given you?
On several occasions I have had women tell me that my pieces were part of a special and momentous day of their lives. Whether it be a wedding, a birthday or a holiday, it is meaningful to be part of something that will last a lifetime in memory and photos.
What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what is your "mantra" / words to live by?
There is no such thing as failure, only lessons learned. Running a business and life in general is filled with ups and downs but you have to move forward and not let it crush your entrepreneurial and personal spirit. You can only learn from your mistakes and grow to become better and stronger.
