How many years have you been in business in NYC?
We’ve been in business for 4 years. Each and every collection is a learning experience. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way and with each mistake, we’ve grown and hopefully gotten better.
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
La Marée means the tide. Being a complete ocean-lover, I knew that the name of my swimwear brand had to have something to do with the sea. After finding the true identity of my brand, I settled on the French word for tide, La Marée. I’ve been privileged to travel a good amount and have seen gorgeous and unique beaches around the world from Mozambique to the Riviera. I am constantly inspired by the unique cultures and aesthetics that each seaside destination has to offer. I take everything in from the sea, greenery, buildings, and people and think about how my suits could live in that place. It’s generally my most recently visited destination blended with Amagansett (always my favorite beach locale) that inspires me.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
The timelessness and quality of our suits truly sets us apart. From the incredibly luxurious fabric, to our hand-made tassels, to the make of our swimwear… our suits are made to last.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love seeing customers walking down the beach in our suits. That and our repeat customers are what keeps me going. What started out as a pipedream has turned into a beautiful brand.
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
My favorite secret NYC spot… Take Care in the West Village. They give the most incredible Micocurrent Facials with jaw massage. For drinks and some good music, we love Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle on a cold winter night. Nothing beats the decor, live piano, and a big glass of red… something every Mom could use after a long day!
How do you benefit Mamas?
I try to make all women feel sexy and confident whether on the beach or by the pool. Getting back into a bathing suit after having a baby isn’t easy, but we really try to help women get excited about showing off their bodies.
Pay it forward and name your top colleagues in the same field or related field:
I truly admire brands such as Surf Bazaar, Fayt Jewelry, Botanica Bazaar, and Warm. The women who own these brands are strong, independent women who are CEOs of their own companies and households at the same time. They define hard work, are devoted mothers, and still find time to surf.
What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what is your "mantra" / words to live by?
Keep your eye on the end game and don’t worry too much about what others are doing. If you stay true to what your message is, and what you’re trying to achieve, you’ll succeed. I am also practicing living in the moment and not getting too far ahead of myself. My Grandfather always said, “don’t worry in advance,” a mantra of sorts I try to remind myself of.
As moms, the day can escape us, what is your best time-saving trick?
Try to have a plan and stay organized. While I by no means am an expert, my saving grace throughout the beginning of motherhood has been mapping everything out. Sure, unexpected events come up, but I have found that planning helps keep me sane in moments of madness.
