How many years have you been in business in NYC?
25 years
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
I started as a Ford model, with problem skin and course, frizzy hair. I wanted to control what I could, so I learned how to do my own makeup and hair, to keep my skin clear and my hair healthy. As talented as the artists were, they didn’t have time to worry about my skins’ future. In 1997 while doing makeup on TV, using the new Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, I sold so much that their PR company hired me as their Global Ambassador. For almost 3 years while I wasn’t working as a model, I was teaching women how to use LM’s makeup. During that time, I was approached to do my own line as well as publish a beauty book. Your MakeOver-Simple Ways For Any Woman To Look Her Best was published by Rizzoli/Universe in 2000, and I went on-air soon after with Morgen Schick Cosmetics on HSN and tSc in Canada.
For almost 10 years I sold my own skincare and makeup with a distinct philosophy to ‘cover what needs to be covered, brighten where we have natural shadows, and LET YOUR SKIN BREATHE’. Five years ago, when at a growth crossroads, I decided to lean OUT. I hung up my makeup brushes and decided to focus on raising my two daughters, while they still needed me. Six months ago, I found Active Argan and decided it was an anti-aging GAME CHANGER and now I’m remaking my signature products with this patented technology and offering it on eVine.co as well as two exclusive boutique outlets; Tracy Anderson Studio & Veronica Beard Boutique.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
I have a distinct perspective. There is no other Model, makeup artist, sole author, skincare and beauty creator. I have always worried about our skin’s future. I created every product, wrote my book myself and have never compromised on my original philosophy. I don’t believe in wearing anything attached to water on your skin that doesn’t benefit your future.
What do you feel gives you longevity in this big city with so many options?
I have just always kept to my original philosophy, even when every huge cometic company came calling, I stayed true.
How do you positively impact your clientele?
We live in a visual society, so pretending that your image doesn’t matter is delusional and not proactive. I try and instill every women with their ability to reach their unique BEAUTY POTENTIAL, now and forever. It’s empowering, calming and inspiring to know that you will constantly become your most beautiful being- never fear aging, in fact- embrace and thrive in it!
What is your favorite part of your job?
Introducing women to their beauty potential
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
I’m not sure I have one- I’m a HUGE SHARER. If it’s a secret, then I’m not doing my job.
How do you benefit mamas?
I instill power, knowledge, and inspiration to be their most spectacular authentic self. What is the most memorable feedback a client has given you? That they never thought they were beautiful, and I introduced them to the image they always knew inside, but never saw back in the mirror — oh, and they can do it themselves in 3 minutes!
Pay it forward and name your top colleagues in the same field or related field:
Marybeth Madron is a brilliant makeup artist and eyebrow sculpting specialist!
What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what is your "mantra" / words to live by?
My mantra is ‘Image matters, but no amount of filler or lipstick can fix a dark heart’.
As moms, the day can escape us, what is your best time-saving trick?
I have a million shortcuts, but my favorite is putting my kids' smoothie veggie mix in the blender the night before, then you just need to add the water/coconut milk & frozen berries - it’s 2 minutes and they are out the door. Also, I only clean my face once a day, even when I workout in the afternoon. We OVER PROCESS our skin, so in the mornings, I just rinse well, add serums, oils & moisturizer and let my skin recalibrate it’s sebum and moisture content.
